Winter is not the most popular season for family photography – but as a family photographer in Kew there are many reasons why I think it should be.
I know the weather can be unpredictable and on the cold side. But the light is stunning at this time of year which makes it particularly flattering for outdoor portraits.
Another reason why winter is great for family photography is the timing of the sessions. They can take place at any time of day because the sun is much lower in the sky. In the summer months, family photoshoots start quite early in the morning or late afternoon / early evening when the light is warmer and more gentle. But fitting these in around young children’s naps or just your generally busy lives can be complicated.
And with fewer people around in the winter months, great locations are less busy and your photoshoot is much less likely to be interrupted by passersby.
Kew family photographER
I met this family on a cold December day in Kew. We’d wrapped up warm and were ready for when the sun made a welcome appearance and wrapped everyone in beautiful soft light.
And of course we kept moving – and it’s not just because I don’t want my families to feel the cold, it’s because I want everyone to enjoy their surroundings and each other. My photoshoots are very much about having fun with your family, they’re laid-back and relaxed so I can capture the moments where families interact naturally with each other. I particularly love the character-filled photograph below showing the natural interactions between brother and sister. These natural moments and everyday details are the ones that everyone loves to look back upon.
Winter photography
Winter is a great time of year to be outside and have fun together as a family. The light is luminous, the grass really is greener and woolly hats and fur hoods beautifully frame faces in portraits.
There are many great locations in and around West London that can provide beautiful seasonal backdrops to your winter portraits. Kew Gardens is a fabulous at any time of year and is perfect for families with children of any age. With so many areas for children to explore and beautiful glass houses to retreat to should there be a shower it is one of the best winter locations.
